Adani Energy Solutions Wins ₹4,700 Crore Transmission Project in Karnataka-Maharashtra

Adani Energy Solutions wins a ₹4,700 crore transmission project to evacuate renewable energy from Karnataka to Maharashtra and support pumped storage projects.

New Delhi: Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL) has won a major transmission project aimed at evacuating renewable energy generated in Karnataka to key power consumption centres in Maharashtra. The project, estimated to involve a capital expenditure of around ₹4,700 crore, will also support the expansion of pumped storage projects in Satara, Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

AESL, the largest private-sector transmission and distribution company in India and part of the Adani Group, emerged as the lowest bidder for the project through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process.

₹4,700 Crore Transmission Project

The project, titled “Network Expansion Scheme in Western Region to Cater to Pumped Storage Potential near Satara (up to 4,500 MW) – Part A,” will be implemented through the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Satara Power Transmission Ltd.

The project is scheduled to be completed within 36 months.

Once commissioned, it will add approximately:

  • 562 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines
  • 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity

to AESL’s existing transmission portfolio.

With the addition of this project, AESL’s cumulative transmission network will increase to 29,739 ckm, while its total transformation capacity will reach 1,43,425 MVA.

Major Transmission Infrastructure in Satara

The project involves the development of several critical transmission assets, including a 765/400 kV substation at Satara.

It will also include the construction of a Kolhapur-Satara 765 kV double-circuit transmission line and augmentation of the Kolhapur pooling station, along with other associated transmission infrastructure.

The new network is expected to strengthen power transmission between southern and western regions and facilitate the evacuation of renewable electricity to major demand centres.

Pumped Storage to Support Renewable Energy

The project is particularly significant because of the growing importance of pumped storage projects (PSPs) in India’s clean-energy transition.

Solar and wind power generation can fluctuate depending on weather conditions and time of day. Pumped storage can help address this challenge by storing electricity and supplying it when demand is high or renewable generation is lower.

According to Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions, pumped storage projects are becoming an important enabler of India’s clean-energy transition by providing the flexibility and reliability needed to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the electricity grid.

He said the Satara transmission project will provide an important transmission backbone for both renewable energy evacuation and energy-storage deployment, while strengthening power flows between southern and western India.

Supporting India’s 500 GW Clean Energy Target

India has set a target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. Achieving this target will require not only large-scale additions of solar, wind and other clean-energy capacity but also a substantial expansion of the country’s transmission network.

Renewable-energy projects are often located far from major industrial and urban demand centres. High-capacity transmission corridors are therefore essential to transport electricity from renewable-rich regions to areas with high power demand.

The Satara project is expected to contribute to this broader transmission infrastructure push by connecting renewable generation and energy-storage capacity with major load centres in western India.

AESL Expands Transmission Footprint

AESL has been expanding its presence across India’s power transmission and distribution sector, with projects designed to connect renewable-energy generation hubs with major consumption centres.

The company currently operates a cumulative transmission network of 29,739 ckm with 1,43,425 MVA of transformation capacity.

Apart from transmission, AESL has businesses spanning electricity distribution, smart metering and cooling solutions. Its retail electricity distribution operations serve consumers in Mumbai and the Mundra SEZ.

The company is also expanding its smart-metering operations as India accelerates the modernisation and digitisation of its electricity distribution infrastructure.

The latest transmission win strengthens AESL’s position in India’s expanding power-infrastructure market and highlights the growing role of transmission and energy storage in supporting the country’s renewable-energy ambitions.
