The Ministry of Coal has successfully auctioned six coal blocks under the 15th Tranche and the 2nd Attempt of the 13th Tranche of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions, marking another significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in the coal sector.
The auction process, launched on April 17, 2026, concluded successfully after forward auctions held between August 3 and August 4, 2026. Of the six coal blocks auctioned, four are fully explored while two are partially explored, highlighting continued investor confidence in India’s commercial coal mining reforms.
Six Coal Blocks Hold Over 1.5 Billion Tonnes of Coal Reserves
The six auctioned coal blocks together contain geological reserves of approximately 1,503.93 million tonnes and have a cumulative Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 11.62 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
According to the Ministry of Coal, these projects are expected to:
- Generate approximately ₹1,983.67 crore in annual revenue
- Attract nearly ₹1,743 crore in capital investment
- Create around 15,710 direct and indirect employment opportunities
The successful auction is expected to accelerate domestic coal production, improve energy security, and reduce India’s dependence on imported coal.
Commercial Coal Mining Gains Momentum Since 2020
Since the launch of commercial coal mining reforms in 2020, the Ministry of Coal has successfully auctioned 147 coal blocks, representing a combined production capacity of 377.974 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
Once operational, these mines are expected to significantly strengthen India’s coal supply and support industries such as power, steel, cement, and manufacturing.
Collectively, the 147 auctioned coal blocks are projected to:
- Generate ₹48,215 crore in annual revenue
- Mobilize ₹54,315 crore in capital investment
- Create nearly 4.9 lakh employment opportunities (4,89,552 jobs) across coal-bearing states
Strengthening Energy Security and Atmanirbhar Bharat
The latest auction reinforces the Government’s commitment to increasing private participation in coal mining while improving domestic production to meet India’s rapidly growing energy demand.
By expanding commercial coal mining, the government aims to strengthen supply chain resilience, reduce coal imports, conserve foreign exchange, and ensure reliable fuel availability for India’s power and industrial sectors.
The Ministry of Coal reiterated that ongoing reforms and transparent auction mechanisms will continue to unlock the full potential of India’s coal resources, making the sector a major contributor to economic growth, employment generation, and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
With successive successful auction rounds and increasing investor participation, India’s commercial coal mining sector is emerging as one of the key pillars of the country’s long-term energy security strategy.
