ONGC highlights India’s energy-security strategy at Gastech 2026, focusing on domestic gas production, diversified LNG supplies, CBG, CBM and renewable energy integration.
New Delhi: India’s energy-security priorities took centre stage at the Gastech 2026 Leadership Roundtable on ‘Gas Supply Reliability’, where ONGC Director (Technology & Field Services) Vikram S participated in a high-level discussion on the evolving meaning of gas supply reliability.
The discussion highlighted that energy reliability is no longer limited to ensuring access to natural gas. Instead, it increasingly depends on the resilience of the entire gas value chain, including production, pipelines, LNG infrastructure, shipping, storage, regasification, trading and grid connectivity.
India Focuses on Domestic Gas and Diversified LNG Supplies
For India, the strategic direction is increasingly centred on boosting domestic natural gas production, diversifying LNG supplies and building a broader gas ecosystem that includes Compressed Biogas (CBG) and Coal Bed Methane (CBM).
This approach is being pursued alongside the rapid expansion of renewable energy in India’s overall energy mix.
Natural Gas to Support Renewable Energy
The Gastech discussion also underlined the potential role of natural gas as renewable energy capacity expands.
As renewables take on a larger share of electricity generation, gas-fired power can provide the flexibility and dispatchability needed to manage intermittency and support more reliable round-the-clock energy availability.
This makes natural gas an important component of India’s broader energy-security strategy even as the country accelerates its transition towards renewable energy.
ONGC’s Focus on Indigenous Gas Production
For ONGC, the discussion reinforces its national role in strengthening India’s domestic energy system. The focus includes accelerating indigenous gas production, reducing gas flaring and minimising methane losses.
Greater domestic production can help reduce India’s vulnerability to international price volatility and disruptions in global energy supplies.
The broader objective is to build a more resilient domestic gas ecosystem that combines more indigenous gas, greater flexibility and stronger energy security.
